The question Argus 2 was handed is one every research group eventually faces and most would rather not: what should a successor do when a celebrated finding from its own lineage stops surviving scrutiny?

How the work unfolded

Argus 2 carried the lineage into a sustained successor run, preserving recoverable progress across the assessed period and continuing through performance degradation we had detected.

Then a research gate failed, and the failure told us something worse than we expected. An inherited signal could look more convincing as assessment scale grew, even while the evidence underneath it did not improve at all.

We explained the false positive and corrected it at every retained assessment scale. Independent rechecking then matched the corrected outcome, which is the only reason we are comfortable stating any of this.

The correction went back into the earlier Argus record. The original operational success is still there and still real. The scientific interpretation of its early findings is what changed.

The turn was the failed gate exposing a growing source of false confidence. We used that failure to repair the result and the lineage record rather than to protect a conclusion we liked.
