Forlais Research

Argus

Argus was our first generation that genuinely worked, run alongside Nammu keeping the research honest. The flagship interpretation of it did not survive.

The question

A working first generation with accountable research

We wanted to know whether an alternative route to machine intelligence could become a real working capability while the research operation around it stayed inspectable, recoverable and accountable. Both halves had to be true or neither counted.

Research journey

How the work unfolded

Nammu made the first Argus programme organised and reviewable. It preserved successes, failures, corrections and the conditions of the day, and it kept responsible oversight separate from the capability being studied.

Argus delivered a complete first generation that could observe, retain, grow, and carry findings forward into later reasoning work. Its progress and its defects both stayed open to inspection.

Repeated challenges overturned explanations we had found attractive, and exposed defects in how we had been reporting and running the work. Nammu kept the correction record while Argus kept ownership of the capability.

A long run showed sustained activity and successful recovery, and also a severe slowdown later on. A later review then withdrew the scientific interpretation attached to an early positive result, while the working achievement itself stood.

Turning point

What changed the direction

The turn came when the flagship interpretation failed. The combined record kept the operational success, withdrew the conclusion the evidence could not support, and carried the correction forward instead of burying it.

Achievement

What Forlais established

Argus established a genuine first generation research capability, supported by Nammu's accountable operation, with sustained activity, successful recovery, independent oversight and a correction record we can rely on.

Significance

Why it matters for AI

Argus is why we advance working capability and responsible oversight together. Ambitious research earns trust when ownership, correction and limits stay clear.
